Today the sides of the motte are clad with trees and its summit is occupied by a bowling green.
Shrewsbury railway station was originally built in October 1848 for the county's first railway - the Shrewsbury to Chester Line. The architect was Thomas Penson Penson of Oswestry.[2] The building is unusual, in that the station was extended between 1899 and 1903 by the construction of a new floor underneath the original station building.[2] The station's platforms also extend over the River Severn. It was operated jointly by the Great Western Railway (GWR) and the London and North Western Railway (LNWR).[3]
Since 2004, Shrewsbury has been labelled as one the most overcrowded prisons in the UK. According to Home Office figures, the prison is the only one in England and Wales operating above what is described as its maximum safe overcrowding level. A report in 2005 named Shrewsbury prison as the most overcrowded in England and Wales and this continues to be the case to the present day. In August 2008 a new report stated that the prison had 178 places in use but currently holds 326 inmates - an overcrowding rate of 183%.[2]
It links the Castlefields area of the town to the northwest with the Cherry Orchard/Underdale part of town to the southeast.
