Demolition took place late in 1997 and 13 years later the site remains undeveloped. Several turnstiles recovered from the site are still in operation at Whyteleafe F.C. in Surrey.
In total, the Britannia Stadium cost £14.7million to construct on the former site of Stafford Colliery. Building work began in late autumn 1996 and was completed in August 1997. The all-seater stadium holds 28,383 supporters (although this has been reduced to 27,500 for the 2008/2009 season due to segregation) in four cantilever stands. The main West stand consists of two tiers of seating which house 7,357 spectators, plus all of the Stadiums corporate and media facilities. The L-shaped Boothen and East stands hold 6,006 and 8,789 people respectively. The South Stand, which is used mainly for away support can accommodate 4,996 people.[6] The stadium is not eligible to be a UEFA 4 star stadium but only because it seats less than 30,000.[7] The clubs dressing rooms, offices, boardroom and club superstore are positioned between the West and South stands.
The historic constituency of Blackburn was created for the 1832 general election and sent two MPs to Westminster. It was abolished in 1950 and replaced for one parliamentary term by two new single-member constituencies, Blackburn East and Blackburn West. At the 1955 general election, Blackburn East and Blackburn West were merged into the modern-day constituency, returning a single MP.
At Blackburn Arena there is a junior development for ice hockey. There are teams for under 10's, under 12's, under 14's, under 16's and under 18's. All these teams go under the name of Blackburn Junior Hawks.
