Many locations in George Eliot's works were based on places in or near her native Nuneaton, including:
Daventry remained a small rural town until the 1950s; in 1950 it had a population of around 4,000. Real growth started in 1955 when the tapered roller bearing manufacturer Timken located a large factory in the town (the factory closed in 2000).[6]
Not much is known about the origins of the hamlet but it is thought to be as old, or nearly as old, as Daventry.[citation needed] It is thought to have peasant origins, although a Roman pavement was discovered near to the hamlet in 1736. It was enclosed in 1753. There is a manor house within the hamlet and also a school built in 1859[citation needed]which once catered for the education of 45 children; it is now a private residence. Today the hamlet is all but a suburb of the town of Daventry although there are still many fine examples of Drayton?s older dwellings around the village green, and in School Street.
The village nestles below a large hill in the valley of the River Nene. The village name is thought to derive from the nearby River Nene. The hill, called Newnham Hill, is topped by an ancient disused windmill, and has commanding views over the nearby town of Daventry. Also on the hill is a large aerial which is part of the air traffic control system of the British Isles.
