A historical curiosity about Southam is that in mediaeval times, the town minted its own local currency[citation needed]. This was done because local people found ordinary coins too high in value for everyday use. The old mint house is now a pub called 'the Old Mint'. During the Civil War King Charles used the mint to make new coins to pay his soldiers.
Cardinal Griffin Catholic High School is a voluntary aided Roman Catholic secondary school with around 950 pupils aged 11?18.
Whilst restoration of the Hatherton Canal is proposed, the restored canal will join the Cannock Extension Canal further south, and there are no proposals to restore any of the canals leading to the junction.
To the east of the town centre is the extensive Rye park (and the river) and dyke. The park has an open-air swimming pool (closed in 2009) and the River Wye winds through the green space, which is particularly attractive during the summer. Wycombes yearly Asian Mela takes place on the Rye, and is popular locally and nationally. There is a museum on Priory Avenue in the town centre situated in its own grounds which include a Norman Castle mound. The theme of the museum is the history of Wycombe, but the main focus is the chair industry.
