Places of interest in Stratford upon Avon, CV37
The village has a Rugby Club, Shottery RFC, which is now based at Stratford's Rugby ground, Pearcecroft, on the Loxley Road, south Stratford. The club was founded by the Reverend David Capron, Vicar of St Andrew's church in the 1984. The Club has an excellent reputation both on and off the field of play.
The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust acquired New Place and Nash's House in 1891. Today the foundations of New Place are accessible through a museum that resides in Nash's House, the house next door.
The grave of Shakespeare's wife Anne Hathaway is next to her husband's. The inscription states, "Here lyeth the body of Anne wife of William Shakespeare who departed this life the 6th day of August 1623 being of the age of 67 years." A latin inscription followed which translates as "Breasts, O mother, milk and life thou didst give. Woe is me - for how great a boon shall I give stones? How much rather would I pray that the good angel should move the stone so that, like Christ's body, thine image might come forth! But my prayers are unavailing. Come quickly, Christ, that my mother, though shut within this tomb may rise again and reach the stars."."[9] The inscription may have been written by John Hall on behalf of his wife, Anne's daughter, Susanna.[10]
It is situated at the point (map: SP364921) where the Birmingham - Leicester route crosses the Trent Valley Line section of the West Coast Main Line 97 miles (156 km) north of London Euston, with a branch running to Coventry. It was known, during the period (1873?1964) when Nuneaton Abbey Street station was open, as Nuneaton Trent Valley, but it is now Nuneaton's only railway station, though many local people still refer to it as Trent Valley.
Nuneaton's traditional industries like textiles and manufacturing have declined drastically in the post-war years. Due to its good transport links, Nuneaton is now largely a commuter town for nearby Coventry and Birmingham. However electronics and distribution remain major economic activities in the town. MIRA Limited, formerly the Motor Industry Research Association, is based on a disused wartime airfield on the A5, to the north of the town. One of the biggest developments in the town's history, the multi-million pound Ropewalk Shopping Centre, opened on 1 September 2005 in the hope that it will give the town extra income from the shopping, attract more visitors and retailers, and steer shoppers away from larger retail centres such as Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester and Solihull. The town centre itself has undergone a successful transition from being an uninteresting 'dormitory town' service centre in the 1980s to a relatively thriving and well-planned retail and business district by the 2000s. Holland & Barrett has its headquarters based on the Attleborough Fields Industrial Estate but it moving to a new headquarters at Elliot Park. Bermuda Park is home of the National Distribution Centre of Dairy Crest and RS Components.
