Himley existed within Seisdon Rural District until 1974, when it was absorbed into the newly-formed South Staffordshire district. Despite this, Himley Hall is owned by Dudley Council and the whole Himley area is situated within the Sedgley DY3 Postal District. The well known Himley Hall is located next to St.Michaels Church, the only church in Himley.
The monorail cost £22 million to build. There were to be five stations, with the system extending over the canal and terminating close to the site of the former Round Oak railway station: Where an interchange with a Midland Metro extension was proposed. However, only the first four stations were completed.
The Delph Locks and surrounding land form the Delph 'Nine' Locks Conservation Area, Brierley Hill, Metropolitan Borough of Dudley.[3]
The name Brierley Hill was formed from three Anglo-Saxon or Old English words; 'brier' meaning the place where the Briar Rose (Rosa rubiginosa) grew, 'leah' or 'ley' meaning a woodland clearing and 'Hill'. The name Merry Hill is derived from the word 'gemeare' which means the boundary, indicating that it was on the boundary of the parish of Kingswinford.[2]
The M5 has served Oldbury since 1964 and passes the town on an elevated section built on reinforced concrete pillars. Access is from junction 2. This is also the closest junction to the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley.
