Chester is served by four train operating companies. A wide range of destinations within Wales is now within easy reach since Arriva commenced operations in 2005.
Chester Zoo is currently operated by the North of England Zoological Society, a registered charity founded in 1934. The Zoo receives no government funding. It is the most-visited wildlife attraction in Britain with more than 1.3 million visitors in 2007.[3] In the same year Forbes described it as one of the best fifteen zoos in the world.[4]
Lead is believed to have been exported at the port of Chester from lead mines in Wales since the Roman period.[6] The construction of the Chester Canal in the 1770s led to industrial development to the east of Chester, with the Walkers, Parker & Co. leadworks being established there in the late 18th century.[6][7] The lead industry became one of Chester's major industries during the 19th century. An archeological investigation carried out in 2001 found evidence of numerous demolished buildings contemporary with the shot tower of 1799;[3] by 1812, the leadworks is known to have also included pipe-drawing machines and a rolling mill for producing lead sheet.[7]
