Hull Maritime Museum

The museum, originally known as the Museum of Fisheries and Shipping, opened in 1912 in Pickering Park.[2] It moved to its current location, the Dock Offices building, in 1974.[3] The Dock Offices building is so-named as it is the former headquarters of the Hull Dock Company, which operated all docks in Hull until 1893.[3] Built in 1872, it is a Grade II* listed building[4] and a striking example of Victorian architecture.[3] The building stands in Queen Victoria Square, opposite the Queen's Gardens, in Hull's city centre. Hull City Council currently operates and maintains the museum.[3]

Holy Trinity Church, Hull

William Wilberforce, who led the parliamentary campaign against the slave trade, was baptised in Holy Trinity Church.[2]

Kingston upon Hull

Kingston upon Hull (pronounced /ˌkɪŋstən əpɒn ˈhʌl/, or locally [ˌkɪŋkstən əpɒn ˈhʊl]), almost invariably referred to as Hull, is a city and unitary authority area in the ceremonial county of the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is located 25 miles (40 km) from the North Sea on the River Hull at its junction with the Humber estuary. Hull has a resident population of 258,700 (2008 est.). Renamed Kings town upon Hull by King Edward I in 1299, the town and city of Hull has served as market town, military supply port, trading hub, fishing and whaling centre, and industrial metropolis.

Scunthorpe

The green shield and golden wheatsheaf recall that the area was until recently agricultural in nature. Across the centre of the shield is a length of chain. This refers to the five villages of Crosby, Scunthorpe, Frodingham, Brumby & Ashby linking together as one. At the top of the shield are two fossils of the species gryphoea incurva. These remains of oysters, known as the "devil's toenails", were found in the rock strata from which ironstone was quarried. The crest, on top of the helm, shows a blast furnace. This is also referred to in the Latin motto: "Refulget labores nostros coelo" or "The heavens reflect our labours" popularly attributed to the glow observed in the night sky from the steelmaking activities.[11]

Flixborough

On Saturday 1 June 1974 at 16:53 Flixborough was at the centre of the UK's worst industrial accident when the Nypro Works chemical plant was devastated by an explosion in what is known as the Flixborough disaster. Twenty eight people died and more than 100 were injured, with around 100 homes in the village itself being destroyed or badly damaged. There is a memorial.
