Flixborough

On Saturday 1 June 1974 at 16:53 Flixborough was at the centre of the UK's worst industrial accident when the Nypro Works chemical plant was devastated by an explosion in what is known as the Flixborough disaster. Twenty eight people died and more than 100 were injured, with around 100 homes in the village itself being destroyed or badly damaged. There is a memorial.

Scunthorpe

Elliot Morley was the Labour Member of Parliament for the Scunthorpe constituency between 1987 and 2010. In 2009 he was accused by the Daily Telegraph of continuing to claim £30,000 from parliamentary expenses for a mortgage that had already been repaid.[37] This led to campaigning group Independents to Save Queen Mary's Hospital reporting him to City of Westminster police alleging fraud and theft. In February 2010, the Crown Prosecution Service informed the Metropolitan Police that it intended to charge him with two counts of false accounting.[38] In the 2010 general election, Nic Dakin was elected as the new MP for the Scunthorpe constituency.

Goole

Goole's industrial park, Capitol Park,[7] has attracted two large employers: Guardian Industries, which built a glass manufacturing plant, and Tesco, which built a distribution centre. The arrival of these employers resulted in hundreds of new jobs being created.[citation needed] A new Morrisons store opened in Goole on 2 August 2010, built on land previously occupied by Timms Mill on Boothferry Road.
