Rotherham

Rotherham ( pronunciation (help·info)) is a town in South Yorkshire, England. It lies on the River Don, at its confluence with the River Rother, between Sheffield and Doncaster. Rotherham, at 6 miles (10 km) from Sheffield City Centre, is surrounded by several smaller settlements, which together form the wider Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham. According to the 2001 Census the population of the Borough of Rotherham is 248,175, and that of the Rotherham urban sub-area 117,262.[1]

Sheffield Arena

For nearly two decades Sheffield Arena has been the only major concert and sporting venue in the Yorkshire region, this however will now change as the city of Leeds will construct its own arena of comparable size which will directly compete with Sheffield Arena. The arena's construction has caused controversy due to the fact that it is funded partly by the government through Yorkshire Forward, a regional development agency, whereas the Sheffield Arena attracted all funding independently with no help from the government. The owners of Sheffield Arena as well as Clive Betts, the MP for Sheffield Attercliffe, have expressed opposition over Yorkshire Forward's funding of Leeds Arena which they see will cause considerable economic damage to Sheffield Arena, East Sheffield and Sheffield/South Yorkshire itself, Yorkshire Forward have dismissed these claims and state that the arena will bring economic growth not only to Leeds and West Yorkshire but to the entire region. Even if the construction of Leeds Arena does not lead to a significant reduction in concerts at Sheffield, the arena may suffer from a fewer customers as residents of Leeds will no longer have to travel to Sheffield to attend concerts. Sheffield is accusing Yorkshire Forward of favouring Leeds when the agency is supposed to represent Yorkshire as a whole and not invest in one city to the detriment of another. In response to outrage from Sheffield, the government has put plans to fund the arena on hold while they conduct an economic risk assessment.[4][5]

IceSheffield

IceSheffield is an ice arena in the Lower Don Valley, Sheffield, England. It was completed in May 2003 at a cost of £15 million. It consists of two Olympic-size ice rinks with seating for 1,500 people. It is now home to most ice hockey teams in Sheffield with the exception being the Sheffield Steelers, who are still based at nearby Sheffield Arena, though the venue has hosted a number of Steelers games in recent seasons.

Broughton Lane Station

The station, with its main access by steps from Broughton Lane bridge, possessed two flanking platforms although was surrounded by sidings. The station closed in 1956 and there are now no signs of it ever existing. In the 1960s a new line was built from near Broughton Lane into the newly opened Tinsley Marshalling Yard and shortly afterwards this was electrified. The site of the station is below the new Greenland Road viaduct over the line and canal near the foundations of the old bridge. Sheffield Supertram now uses the site and the nearest tram stop is near the local arena.

Bentley, South Yorkshire

Bentley is a village in South Yorkshire, England two miles north of the town of Doncaster. The village was once owned by Edmund Hastings of Plumtree, Nottinghamshire, who had inherited it from his wife Copley's Sprotborough family. Hastings subsequently sold the manor to John Levett, a York lawyer born at High Melton who married the niece of Hastings's wife, who then conveyed it to Sir Arthur Ingram of York, High Sheriff of Yorkshire.[1][2]
