The station was opened on 26 April 1982 by Metro (the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive). It is close to the site of an earlier station on the branch line to Kirkburton which closed in 1930.

Turnbridge is the area to the east of Huddersfield town centre ring road in West Yorkshire, England.
