During the time when the Rochdale Canal was abandoned, parts of the original line in Sowerby Bridge were filled in for a road widening scheme. In order to restore the canal, a tunnel was built under the road and a single deep lock provided upstream of, and in place of the former locks 3 and 4.
Odsal is famous for at one time holding the world record for the largest rugby football crowd of 102,569 at the replay of the 1954 Challenge Cup final between Warrington and Halifax on 5 May 1954. However it is thought that many more attended the game, as this does not include thousands who watched the game from outside the stadium. The official record attendance of 102,569 for a rugby league fixture stood for roughly 45 years before being broken in 1999 following the opening of Stadium Australia.
Horsfall Stadium is a sports stadium located just off Halifax Road in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, approximately 3 miles south-east of the city centre. It is currently the home of Bradford Park Avenue Football Club and Bradford Airedale Athletics Club.
Bingley Three Rise Locks is a staircase of three locks on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Bingley, West Yorkshire, England. It opened in 1774 and was a major feat of engineering at the time along with the larger Five Rise opened at the same time and several hundred meters further up. The lock comprises a staircase flight?the lower gate of one lock forming the upper gate of the next lock.
In effect the 5-rise consists of five locks connected together with (as always with a staircase) no intermediate "pounds": the lower gate of each chamber forms the upper gate of the chamber below. There are therefore five chambers, and six gates (the top and bottom gates and four intermediate gates). As the Leeds Liverpool canal is a wide canal, the chambers are 14 feet (4.3 m) wide, and each "gate" consists of two half-gates, "hinged" from opposite sides of the canal. Each half gate is slightly more than 7 feet (2.1 m) wide, so that the two halves close in a "V" shape (pointing "upstream"). Water pressure on the "uphill" side of the gate thus keeps it tightly closed until the water levels on either side are equal, when the gate can be opened and the boat moved to the next chamber (see canal locks for more information on how a lock is constructed and operated).
